Star Trek XI: The Failed Idea

Trek's franchise has gone to the abyss

We star trekkies rush up in hope of a new movie. Like mice to cheese, the multitude is screaming in happiness. But the cheese might not be what you think.

Last year, Star Trek X: Nemesis attracted a meer $67 million to the big screen, as opposed to The Voyage Home which rounded up to $134 million. We have seen a degrading trend in these movies, starting with Enterprise.

Enterprise was totally new to the universe. Like always, everyone was hopping happily. At first it was OK, but then it got ultimately worse. The 3rd season was HORRIBLE. The whole Xindi thing bored! By the end of it (and we were glad it ended), UPN's Star Trek number dived. The fourth season may've been the best in the Enterprise series, but we all knew Star Trek would never be the same as when Captain Picard was around.

That was the beginning. Nemesis was worse. It completely spat at the Next Generation series. The fans were screaming at the death of Data, who was one of the favorite characters. All we were left with was a brain-dead Data (AKA, B4). The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, came out a few days after and sent Nemesis to the abyss.

Now too Star Trek XI. We see this horrid trend going on. In the interviews the people are saying "oh, it's a secret." But is that due to the fact that if they've been doing it badly, like Nemesis?

In William Shatner's Star Trek Movie Memories, he talks about all the movies. Now, we hear that it will be about the academy days of Spock and Kirk. But William Shatner says that while making Star Trek IV, they thought about making a prequel about how young Spock and young Kirk meet. They sent in the idea multiple times. The idea has already died 8 deaths.

They have Kirk reminiscing the old days. As William Shatner puts it "Y'know, he says 'Well, we could do this, but on the other hand we could do that, or maybe we could even try that other thing, and...'"

You can see the film die right before your eyes. Now, they are finally doing it. But, I feel this won't be what I expect. After seeing the movie poster. Unlike the past 10 films, this poster says nothing! Nemesis, I admit, had good marketing. But we also go to the Producer. The producer, J.J. Abrahams, is the one who created Lost. Lost boggles my mind ("I feel lost in Lost). This guy, I feel, will only produce another thing like Lost.

By knowing this now, can we see what will happen in the next movie, whether it'll be a failure like Nemesis, or not?
